Wine tasting for parents at a 5 year old’s birthday party?

My husband and I are planning a birthday party for our soon-to-be 5 year old daughter. We’ve decided on a movie party. He wants to have an activity for the adults as the kids are watching the movie. My suggestion was a wine tasting. We are both wine lovers and have been wanting to have a tasting. Would it be tacky to have one while the kids are watching their movie?
Trust me, it won’t be a boring movie party. We will have a theatre style set up. The last birthday party we went to, the kids were wanting to watch tv anyway. We’ll have games for about an hour before the party, a theatre style popcorn machine, prizes, and other neat stuff for the kids.

Yes. What a boring party for the kids too. What birthday party for a 5 year includes a movie. How about some games that include the adults helping the kids? Make it about the kids not the adults.
I don’t think that is a good idea at all. Wine tasting at a 5 year olds birthday party…. What if the 5 year old and the other children snuck out of the movie and got ahold of the wine themselves? Wouldn’t be a very good thing.
personally I dont agree with it, its a party for kids, as much torture as it is to have children running, screaming for a few hours … it should be to bear with no alcohol in front of kids.
Want to drink do it on your own time not a childrens party.
I would try and find another idea for the adults…sorry, but I, myself rarely drink around minors, especially if there are several of them that has to be looked after…sorry…but that’s just me. How about some kind of cookout where everyone can bring something that is an original dish of theirs? That could be something all could enjoy…food tasting! A lot of uptight people are going to say yes, that it is tacky. That’s because a lot of people are uptight. So if you and your childrens friends parents feel comfortable with it, then I don’t see anything wrong with it at all. It is something fun that you adults can do while you are socializing. Plus, it is just “tasting”, that doesn’t mean anyone will be getting all shitty. I say go for it and have fun. Happy Birthday to your daughter.
The Only one thing concerns me here. When alcohol is in the mix ( no pun intended) there is always the possibility for irresponsible behavior or over indulgence. While I think that a wine tasting in itself is a great idea for a parents only evening, It may not be a good idea in combination with kids.
yeah it would be tacky. and unsafe the kids will probably be asking 4 some. and when the partys over who’s driving??

Well, I think it is kind of weird for the adults to be drinking. See if one of you guys gets drunk then the children will want do that instead which they can’t.
Have a barbecue and sit outside and you could drink out there away from the kids.
As long as the wine tasting doesn’t get out of hand (as the hosts, it should be part of your responsibility to see that it doesn’t) it should be alright. IF any of the other kids’ parents — who may or may not be present — do not approve of having their children see grown-ups drinking alcohol, please accept it graciously and abide by their wishes; find something else for the grown-ups to taste, like fine cheeses, crackers, and spreads. Personally, though I do not drink, I think it’s good for children to see grown-ups drinking and handling it responsibly. They’ll need good role models in this someday. Not everyone agrees with that, though, so do please ask the parents what they’re comfortable with. You’ll be an excellent role model for your daughter if you consider the other parents’ opinions and graciously abide by their wishes without griping.
YES! If you want to have a tasting why do on the same day as your daughters birthday party. This is her day not yours. Are you going to let the parents know ahead of time some may be uncomfortable with this situation. I just want on a wine tasting this past weekend with over 20 people and there was not one sober person there. Why don’t you give the parents a break and let them leave their kids at your house for the few hours if you are worried about an adult activity.
The party is for your son not for the adults who come. 5 year old boys are not known to sit quietly and watch a full movie nor should they. Plan some active games for the boys. If you would like to have a wine party then get sitters for the children and have an adult party another time. This day is for you son and his friends. Make it fun and something he will talk about for weeks.
As long as you have a designated person to stay with the kids and nobody gets drunk–remember they have to drive home. If you want more info about wine check here–
