some of the cask wines are not so bad anymore. give one a try. if you don’t like it, it will keep til your next party due to the one way valve. then you can turn it into punch. try another & so on.
White Zinfandel is good and mellow.
What’s cheap? 3 bucks? 8 bucks?
Reds? Whites? Sparkling?
For crazy cheap, hit Trader Joes. I’m not a fan of their “3 buck chuck” Charles Shaw, the Noir and Sav are the only ones I’d drink under any circumstances, but their “Moon” line is passable and cheap ($6 to $8 I think). Old Moon and Blue Moon and Tuscan Moon and so forth, you can’t miss them.
A step up would be Blackstone, Clos du Bois, then Ravenswood. These are still all pretty much table wines, but you’re looking for cheap, so I’m staying with $10 as a rough guide. You can also do Black Box. It’s $25 for a box but it’s 3L, that works out to 5+ bottles. So if you drink enough it works out to less than $5 a bottle. I’m not a huge fan of the merlot, but it was at least better than Shaw or Yellowtail. Well, Yellowtail’s reserve line is drinkable.
For white: drink rieslings like Relax or one of the blue bottles from Schmitt Sohne. They’re light, if a little boring. Nothing worse than a cheap white. There are a few, but they tend to be light sweet wines like chenin blanc or super sweet stuff.
