I was reading a recipe that called for red wine in the beef stew, I was surprised to see that they didn’t mention the type of red wine.
I’m a beer gal, I wouldn’t know a good wine from rotgut,

Personally I would use a big red. Cabernet Sauvignon. But that’s just me. It’s all personal taste.
Any type of dry red wine will work- like a Chianti or Cabernet, or a Merlot. Buy something you like, and drink the rest with dinner!
I’ll give you a tip on that. I learned long ago, if the wine tastes like crap, it will make your food taste like crap too.
Chose a wine that’s to your liking but not too sweet. I used a good merlot or Shiraz before in a cajun gumbo.
Just add the kind you like to suit your taste…and it doesn’t have to be a red; that’s just a myth.
You should only cook with wines that you would also drink. Since we like hearty red wines, I’d use a cabernet or merlot (that’s all I usually buy). A pinot noir or beaujolais would be too light
