You can get a nice sec (slightly sweet) champagne like a moet, piper, veuve cliquot etc. (price $20 - $35 ) and classic strawberries dipped in chocolate. Very romantic.

For a romantic evening you might want to have a sparkling wine. If you like sweet wines, a spumante would be a good choice. I'd also recommend this sparkling wine from Australia:

Greg Norman Estates NV Sparkling Wine
The wine is a pale straw green in color and it has a very fine, yet persistent bead. On the nose there are lifted strawberry, citrus and nutty aromas with just a hint of sherbet character. On the palate it is a medium to full bodied style with generous stonefruit and citrus flavors and a very smooth, yet generous finish. ($16.79)

For info on what type of wine goes best with which foods take a look at:

Congratulations!

Wine and cheese is a classic, classy pairing. Make a little picnic on the floor by the fireplace with a bottle or two of wine, a baguette, and a few cheeses. You can see what pairs well together at the site below.

Generally speaking, if you do not want a dry wine, stay away from big reds (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir) as well as the most common whites (Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay). Look for a Sauternes, a Moscato d'Asti, or an Eiswein (Icewine). These delicate sweet wines will generally cost a bit more($30+), but it well worth the money. These are great with deserts made from fruit, as well as darker chocolates. Also, most champagnes tend to be dry since they are made from the Pinot Noir grape, so you may want to stay away from them, as well.

Why not buy a bottle of Champagne, such as a spumante, and have it for desert with dark chocolate cake. Spumante can come in many different fruity flavors and goes great with chocolate, my husband and I had a glass of cherry spumante and a drak chocolate bar for desert last night. If there are any specialty food stores or wineries near you they will be more than happy to give you ideas as well. Or check out for some great ideas.

If you get a red, Merlot is good. Pinot Grigio is a good white. With red, You are better with read meat or a spicy dish. White is always good with Chicken, fish, and creamy pasta's.

Decide what you want to eat, then choose your wine.

Anyone at a wine shop, or even the person in charge of your wine area at your local store can help you.

For dessert, nothing is better than wine and cheese, or wine and chocolate.

If you normallyy drink mixed drinks and beer be sure you BOTH like wine beforehand.
Cheese and cracker pair wonderfully, get gourmet type such as water crackers and cheese that you normall wouldn't have around the house.
If you want it to be really romantic have you thought about champagne? You can have strawberries and cream and well, let's just say the cream can be used for other things. Guys find that really romantic.
