You can use broth instead of white wine… but a decent wine look for something at $8 and up.
A good bottle of wine can start at about $9-$10.
As the other poster said you can substitute chicken broth. Also, you can substitute apple juice. It sounds weird, but apple juice really does work.
don’t spend too much on a bottle that you are cooking with. just make sure you would drink it. a chardonnay or pinot grigio around $ 10
Generally you can get a good bottle of white (especially for cooking) for under $10. I would recommend, for cooking in a casserole, a wine called Rossi. I live in Maine, and here it is about $7.50 a bottle. Surprisingly good.
Good for the cooking or good for drinking with it? In either case you can get a bottle that fits both purposes for less than $US 5 (I assume because you mention Kroger you are a midwesterner or southerner or mountain states resident of the USA). Plenty of decent CA chardonnays and sauvignon blancs below that price. If you live near a licenced Trader Joe’s store its 2 Buck Chuck (Charles Shaw) line includes a very good sauvignon blanc (its chardonnay not quite so) and I am told that Wal-Mart’s private label is also a great buy although we have not yet tried it. Plenty of foreign wines will also fit the bill, like vinho verde from Portugal and white penedes from Spain.
You are asking two different questions. A GOOD bottle of white can easily be several hundred dollars. But, i’m guessing you don’t want that for your Flipper surprise. My choice would be Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (2006 preferably). The stores near me (Target, Trader Joe’s, Fred Meyer ((which is Kroger))) carry it for around $15 and my local costco has it for $12.99.
It’s great for cooking because it’s quite dry and citrusy, but goes down smoothly as a drinking wine. I bought a case to drink this summer. Remember, you NEVER want to cook with something you wouldn’t drink. : )
there are many good cheap wines out there. You would be suprised at what $10.00 will get you. Just get out there and start sampleing, you will find one that you like for drinking purposes.
Cooking with wine look for the cheapest of the cheap, you will dot be able to ditinguish the difference in cooking. I my self use Franzia in a 5 litre box.
