April asked: I want to cook pork in white wine and I forgot the white wine at the store. Can I substitute White Zinfandel or will it taste nasty?
Thanks!

Try it, it wont hurt you. If you can drink the wine you can cook with it.

No! White Zinfandel is too sweet for cooking recipes unless specifically called for. If you want to substitute you can get a cheap Chablis or Chardonnay. White wine in recipes is whgite in color, White Zinfandel is pink.

No. you are better of using chicken broth or even apple juice. White Zin is a horribly sick kool aid type wine. It is not a white wine.
another tip I found for you…this is from a web site that does ingredient substitutions. way at the bottom of the chart is advise for substiting white wine.

I use white zin in cooking all the time and it’s fine. It’s sweeter than some other white wines but pork goes well with sweet, (think porch chops and applesauce) it will be fine.

I wouldn’t! Recipes that call for white wine are usually refering to drier wines like a Chardonay. White Zin is like a blush too sweet for a replacement in a recipe.

Absolutely yes.
I am sure that this would work very well indeed. The flavours of the white zin (predominantly summer fruits with some sweet herbal aromas) would be an excellent marinade for soft-flavoured red meat such as pork. Don’t be afraid to experiment with food (within reason). Personally, I think that a white or blush zin, as long as it has a nice, crisp acidity to the palate, would be just as good as white wine, if not better, for this meat.
Enjoy, and please let me know how it goes as it sounds like a lovely swing on the recipe!

Yes – the finished product will be slightly sweeter but it will be fine.

I wouldn’t if your recipe called for white wine=Zinfandel is pink and very sweet-why ruin your other ingredients? The white wine should be on the dry side-the achohol will cook off the the basic taste will be there!

You can substitute the white zin for white wine. Chances are it will change the flavor subtly, because it would be sweeter than a normal cooking white wine.

Unless you are cooking for some Professional Chefs I gaurantee you they are not going to notice the difference. Sweet goes fine with pork so I say go for it and enjoy your meal!!
