The French Paradox, the fact that the French eat a diet high in saturated fat but have a low incidence of coronary artery diseases, has been known for a long time. The French diet should normally increase the incidence of coronary artery diseases, not lower it. The suggested explanation for the paradox has been the high consumption of red wine in France.
While alcohol normally increases your blood pressure, red wine has been proved to contain substances that lower the risk of heart diseases. As an additional bonus, red wine also contains substances that slow down ageing process. When the French Paradox was reported in the US back in 1991, the sales of red wine increased by almost 45 percent. White wine is produced in a different way and does not have the same positive health effects as its red colleague.
So how much is a healthy daily consumption of wine? Medical experts give a wide range of answers. Some don’t believe that red wine has any positive effect at all. But most research seems to confirm that one glass of wine a day can be good. Some push it towards two glasses, at least for men. The larger you are the more you can drink, smaller people are generally recommended to stick to one glass wine a day or less.
No medical expert recommends non-drinkers to start drinking red wine for health reasons. If you are drinking wine, it should be for pleasure. But it can be nice to known that in moderate quantities red wines can have some positive health effects as a bonus.
It’s worth remembering that while the French have a lower incidence of coronary artery disease they also have one of the highest rates of cirrhosis of the liver in the world. The latter is often caused by excessive drinking of alcohol. So once again, drink and enjoy your wine in moderation.
If you suffer from hypertension, trying more traditional remedies such as relaxation, physical activity and slow breathing, is a safer way of reducing your blood pressure.

I am wanting to put together a homemade wine fermenter. I do not want to buy the $70-150 kits they sell. I’ve also already seen the pages where they list about 100 supplies you need to buy to make them but I have also seen the pages where you can use household items to make wine. I am wanting to assemble a kit that will make a quality taste but does not have to be great. If anyone knows information or where I can find information it would be very appreciated. Thanks.

I’m actually interested to use the white wine vinegar to flush out the limescale from my washing machine so taste isn’t important but would also be interested to know whether it could be used in cooking…

While traveling, I was in a city that banned hard liquor sales on Sunday, so my wife and I were served a white wine margarita and a red wine daquiri. They weren’t bad! Anyone have a recipe to share?
I don’t think they merely substituted the wine for the tequila/rum. Call it a pseudo-margarita/daquiri.

Wine tasting is a technique that takes some practice and skill to master. Obviously, wine tasting is the most important activity that goes along with writing a wine review and scoring a wine.
Wine tasting starts with simply looking at the wine. You should look at the wine by pouring it into a clear glass and holding it in front of a white background. This allows you to observe its full color without any background effects. Color differences can be very subtle, and can indicate many aspects of the wine. For example, colors in white wines give different flavors, or might indicate age. You could also tilt the glass to observe the color of the wine’s “rim.” In wine tasting, a purple color in the rim could indicate a young wine, while brown could mean a mature wine.
We now know that most of a taste actually comes from our sense of smell. Thus, after observing the wine’s color, during a wine tasting you should smell the wine’s “bouquet” or “nose.” This helps identify subtle tastes that your tongue won’t recognize. Then, take a sip of the wine and swish the wine around in your mouth. It was first thought that only certain taste buds on the tongue were able to detect certain tastes like sweetness or bitterness.
We now know this is not true, so swishing the wine in a wine tasting allows all of your taste buds to experience the flavor. While you’re tasting it, you should be able to develop a first impression, or what tastes are most apparent from the wine. Next, take a breath with the wine in your mouth to get an idea of the texture of the wine — light, rich, smooth, or harsh. Last, you can either spit out the wine or swallow it, and get an idea for the wine’s aftertaste.
