Different Types of White Wine

Most wines are made out of grape juice that is being fermented. After fermentation, the resulting wine is clear in color. This clear wine is called white wine.

There are several kinds of white wine. In America, the most well loved and fastest selling white wine is Chardonnay. Chardonnay grape is also a major contributor to the wine’s popularity. Chardonnay grape is low maintenance and can grow in almost any climate. This results in big harvests worldwide, translating to millions of bottles annually.

Chardonnay goes well with poultry dishes, pork, sea food or dishes with heavy cream.

Another kind of white wine is Chennin Blanc. It is made from a variety of grape that grows in France’s Loire Valley, in South Africa and in California. Chennin Blanc can range from dry to very sweet. Depending on the time of harvest, this kind of white wine may taste like apple, melon, line or pear with a tinge of vanilla and honey.

Chennin Blanc is best paired with salads, spicy rice dishes, sushi, seafood and white meats.

Another kind of white wine is Gewurztraminer. Grapes for this wine are usually grown in France, Germany, US, Australia and New Zealand. The vines usually grow best in cooler climates.

Gewurztraminer can either be purchased in dry or sweet varieties. Wine experts say that this white wine is best enjoyed if it was drunk sooner rather than later post-bottling. Upon tasting, Gewurztraminer may acquire the tastes of honey, pumpkin, spice, cinnamon, apricot, pear and rose.

It is a good wine to pair with Asian dishes, barbecue or chicken wings.

Pinot Blanc is another popular kind of white wine. It is a medium dry to dry white wine produced from Alsace, France. Usually, oak barrels are not used in the process of maturation for Pinot Blanc.

Its light flavor with citrus undertones combined with high acidity makes it perfect for seafood, light-flavored meats and mild flavored cheeses.

Finally, there’s Pinot Grigio. This wine has the flavor of melon and pear. It also has a subtle fruity taste and often has an undertone of honey. Pinot Grigio is pale, almost straw like in color.

Its smooth taste makes it a perfect drink to pair with pastas and cheese crackers. It should not pair with food with high acid content, such as citrus fruits or tomatoes, because the wine is already acidic.

I’d like advice about very good/the best vineyards/wineries in the Santa Barbara area.a few friends and I want to celebrate a birthday.
I would like a place where we can wine taste for free or cheap ( we are all a bit broke..and I’ve never done this so i don’t know if they are usually free with at least a few bottle purchases, or if you have to pay for wine tasting seperately). We will probably buy a few bottles anyway.
Also, we are probably going to want to picnic or something…so can we bring our own stuff and picnic there? do people do that? is that an additional fee? I’m not sure if we want a tour of the vineyard or the wine making process, buts a nice option to have.
I just don’t know anything. But i do want a nice place with an awesome ambience to have a great time with friends..and hope that it won’t cost an arm and a leg.
I appreciate any advice about specific places in the area. I would also appreciate advice about facts to consider and anything about how things are done
Thanks, but I already knew about the site…I wanted personal experience kid of suggestions for places though…like if youve been to a particular one you would recommend.

Simple Wine Etiquette Tips To Enjoy

It doesn’t matter whether you enjoy a glass of wine at home with friends, in a restaurant or in a tasting room at a vineyard, there are a number of things that you should avoid doing. This will really help you, and those you are with, have an enjoyable experience.

Wine Tasting

You can enjoy a wine taster at a vineyard or even a local wine shop, either way the correct etiquette should be followed.

If you are going to be tasting a number of different types of wine you traditionally start with the white wines first. This is because white wines are lighter in both taste and body compared to red wine. After you have tasted the white wines you can then move onto the reds which are fuller bodied.

When holding your glass, make sure to grip the stem. If you hold the wine glass by the bowl, your hand will heat the wine. This could change the flavor.

Even the smallest details can change the flavour of wine. So make sure you don’t wear any strong smelling perfumes which could mask or interfere with the bouquet.

Avoid eating heavily flavoured foods such as curries and don’t smoke. Both these things will limit the flavours you’ll taste in the wine.

Restaurant Etiquette

When ordering wine with a meal in a restaurant make sure you select one which compliments your meal. When asking the server, or better yet the restaurants sommeliers, for a recommendation, be sure to be specific. Ask what wines compliment your dish and say whether you prefer full-bodied wines or wines from a specific region.

Once the wine has been selected and brought to the table, one of you should have a taste of it. A small amount will be poured and the taster will swirl it in the glass and have a sip. When approval is given, wine is poured starting on the right with women having their glasses filled first. The host’s glass is topped off last.

Serving Guests at Home

Although you are in your own home, many of the same rules apply such as the way you hold a glass and the fact that women and older guest should be served first.

Select some wines which you think your guests will enjoy. Start with light white wines in the same way you do in a tasting room. Also select foods that will complement the wines such as cheese and fruit. Swiss, brie and Gouda go excellently well with white wine. Next move onto the red wines. Reds have a heavier body than whites. Select a red that goes well with your main dish if you are having a meal. If you are having a simple party, again, have cheeses that will bring out the flavor of the wine.

Finish off the evening with a sweet dessert wine. Port is a wonderful choice. Make sure you choose a dessert that will compliment it.
